Kilkenny and Carlow Education and Training Board (KCETB) welcomed\u00a0Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science\u00a0(DFHERIS)\u00a0James Lawless\u00a0to\u00a0Kilkenny\u00a0on\u00a0Wednesday, February 18<\/span>th<\/span>\u00a0as he visited\u00a0a number of\u00a0key KCETB sites.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Arriving at KCETB Training Services,\u00a0Purcellsinch\u00a0Campus, Minister Lawless\u00a0was met by Dr.\u00a0Lindsay Malone, Chief Executive\u00a0and Martha Bolger, Director of Further Education and Training.\u00a0Following a constructive meeting,\u00a0focused on strategic priorities\u00a0for KCETB,\u00a0the Minister\u00a0toured\u00a0the facilities at the\u00a0Purcellsinch\u00a0Campus\u00a0before visiting the KCETB College of the Future site at\u00a0Joinersfolly, Kilkenny.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While touring\u00a0Purcellsinch, the Minister saw for himself\u00a0apprentices undertaking Phase 2 Electrical Training and met a range of staff supporting Apprenticeship, Skills Training and Skills\u00a0To\u00a0Advance.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking during the visit, Minster Lawless said,\u00a0<\/span>\u201cI am delighted to be here in Kilkenny today to see, first hand,\u00a0all of\u00a0the\u00a0great work\u00a0being done by Kilkenny and Carlow Education and Training Board (KCETB) across further education,\u00a0training\u00a0and apprenticeships. I had the opportunity to meet with the leadership team of KCETB to discuss their plans for the new FET College in Kilkenny City. I also visited the proposed site for the college and saw firsthand the potential this development holds for learners and the wider community. At the meeting, I confirmed that I have instructed my department officials and relevant agencies to prioritise work on these projects, with a view to ensuring that design teams are appointed in 2026 for those ETBs that are ready to\u00a0<\/span><\/i>proceed.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the key\u00a0objectives\u00a0of my\u00a0Department\u00a0is to promote lifelong learning, and this includes both improving access for learners and expanding apprenticeships. KCETB is delivering on this, meeting the needs of learners and employers across the two counties in an incredibly agile and innovative way.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My officials and I look forward to continued collaboration with KCETB on our shared skills agenda, and shared commitment to empowering people and communities through learning.\u201d<\/span><\/i> \"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

Before the official visit ended, Minister Lawless took time to meet with learners,\u00a0staff\u00a0and management at Kilkenny Youthreach offices. There, the learners engaged in meaningful discussion around the services they attend and the value it brings to their lives. The visit provided the Minister with first-hand insight into how FET provision in Kilkenny is responding to the evolving learner pathways and skill needs.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During his visit\u00a0to\u00a0Kilkenny\u00a0Youthreach,\u00a0the\u00a0Minister was presented with\u00a0a\u00a0textile\u00a0piece\u00a0of\u00a0felt and\u00a0embroidery\u00a0created by\u00a0Nancy\u00a0Brophy, a\u00a0Year\u00a01\u00a0Leaving\u00a0Certificate Applied\u00a0Learner.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Chief Executive Dr. Lindsay Malone welcomed the Minister\u2019s visit stating\u202f<\/span>\u201cWe were delighted to welcome Minister Lawless to Kilkenny today and to share the ambitious direction KCETB is pursuing FET across the South\u2011East. The development of the Kilkenny College of the Future is a cornerstone of this vision. It will act as a regional hub for innovation, advanced skills and smart specialisation, supporting learners of all ages and strengthening the entire education ecosystem. KCETB remains firmly committed to advancing all critical infrastructure to support our schools, centres, colleges and our communities into the future, ensuring that the region is equipped with modern, high\u2011quality learning environments that meet evolving needs. This is not simply an investment in new infrastructure; it represents an investment in the region\u2019s competitiveness, resilience and long\u2011term prosperity. KCETB remains focused to building a modern, agile and future\u2011ready education and training system, and today\u2019s visit reflects the strong partnership between KCETB and the Department as we work together to deliver transformative impact for learners, communities and employers.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Reflecting on the Minister\u2019s visit,\u00a0Director of Further Education and Training,\u00a0Martha Bolger said<\/span>\u202f\u201c<\/span><\/i>We are delighted that the Minister has given the go ahead for the KCETB College of the Future to move on to the next phase. The Minister has committed to having a design team appointed by the end of the year.\u00a0<\/span><\/i>KCETB\u2019s FET\u00a0Service is evolving at pace\u00a0to\u00a0meet\u00a0the\u00a0needs\u00a0of\u00a0learners, communities\u00a0and\u00a0employers\u00a0across Kilkenny and Carlow. From\u00a0Apprenticeship to Adult Literacy,\u00a0to expanded engineering and green skills provision, we are focused on delivering responsive, innovative programmes that create real pathways into sustainable careers. Today\u2019s visit\u00a0provided\u00a0an important opportunity to\u00a0demonstrate\u00a0how our partnerships, facilities and learner\u2011centred approaches are shaping a vibrant and agile FET ecosystem for the region\u201d.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
